My Dental Coach: What about Dental X-rays?

What about Dental X-Rays?

To x-ray or not to x-ray: that has always been the
question in dentistry. You must weigh the risks of
exposure to the benefits of diagnosis. X-rays are the
“eyes” of the dentist and without them many problems could
go unnoticed.

It is important to understand that a clinical examination
is limited to what the dentist can feel or visually
inspect; valuable in a soft tissue evaluation or for
probing grooves and checking a bite. What lurks underneath
the hard structures (teeth and jawbone), however, cannot be
palpated or easily seen. Dental decay can form between
teeth, on root surfaces, or under old fillings or crowns
where a dental explorer cannot reach. Infections at the
roots of teeth, bone height supporting the roots, lesions
in the jawbone, or impacted teeth are nearly impossible to
detect without the aid of dental xrays.

Technological advances have ensured that radiation can be
significantly reduced with high speed film or computerized
digital xrays. Combine that with lead shield protection,
you can rely on the fact that your exposure from dental
x-rays taken today is about 70% -90% less radiation than
with the older systems.

As far as frequency is concerned; that really depends on
your dental condition and overall physical status. Discuss
your concerns with your dentist and then decide what is
best for your health.
