Cold Sore or Canker Sore?

Cold sores, also known as fever blisters are found outside,typically on the lips. Fever blisters, a typical eruption from the Herpes virus, are very contagious. These lesions are most effectively treated by a prescription antiviral such as Acyclovir. Other over the counter treatments include lysine- an amino acid and some topical ointments. All are most effective when signs and symptoms are in the early stages.

Canker sores or aphthous ulcers are the most common oral ulcers in man and are estimated to affect one-fourth of the population worldwide. Mechanical trauma, emotional stress, food allergies, hypersensitivity to some toothpastes or dental materials, and vitamin deficiencies may play a contributory role in some patients.

Avoid strong sunlight, put protective salves on your lips and make sure your taking your B-Vitamins. A mixture of aloe vera gel with goldenseal is healing. Some over the counter treatments such as OraBase help to cushion the tender ulcerated area.

It's best to refrain from kissing anyone or drinking from the same container. Never share make-up or lip balm even when there is no apparent outbreak. Shedding viruses occur before the lesions appear.
