Periodontal surgery is indicated when your gum pocket depths are so deep that you can't adequately clean them. No matter what you do, that brush or floss will not get down to the bottom of the pockets.
The purpose of periodontal surgery is to reduce the depths of those pockets to a point where you can clean them effectively. But that is just the beginning:
Fighting gum disease is a lifetime battle. At home maintenance, including daily oral irrigation, will be most helpful.
Remember: Gum disease is not only a local problem of your mouth. Your mouth is connected to the rest of your body. Maintaining proper nutritition, eliminating smoking, daily exercise and developing healthy lifestyle habits will all contribute to a healthier gum condition and help you keep your teeth for a lifetime.
Hope that helps.
